On the 20th of October 2018, Marcelina Dumaquit was gunned down along with 8 others in what is now called the Massacre of the Sagay 9. The group as reportedly eating dinner when several armed men opened fire on the group that was within their tents.
Marcelina, along with 8 others, were members of the National Federation of Sugarcane Workers (NFSW) that was occupying land marked for redistribution under the long waited land and agrarian reforms that have been slow to manifest.
It is reported that the perpetrators of the massacre are likely linked to the government-backed paramilitary groups that known to be patrolling the region against civil protests.
Similar reports place individuals within the NFSW organization as key authors of the crime however this has yet to be elaborated.
International bodies have called for more thorough investigations yet have yielded little results.
