The Small Farmers’ Movement (MPA) denounces the murder of comrade Katison de Souza, a militant and peasant leader in the state of Pará on the morning of Saturday, June 2, 2018.
Katison left his home every day around 6:30 p.m to go to the house of his father where he worked. On the way he was approached by unidentified persons and murdered by several blows from a machete. Katison was found dead by the side of the road road in Santa Izabel (PA).
Katison had been receiving threats since last year. «It is very hard to know that the struggle for land and the rights of the countryside is still marked with blood, unfortunately the collapse we suffer of our democratic rights has made this scenario only worse» says Luiz of the MPA.

The Small Farmers Movement (MPA) expressed its indignation at the murder of fellow Movement member Katison de Souza in the State of Pará. “Katison was the latest victim of violence in the countryside, a frequent target of the «Lords» who own the land and use it as a tool to generate profit at any cost, even if it has to take lives to maintain its profit strategy.
Katison on the contrary fought for the land in order to bring security to his four children and companion, as well as in the search for dignity for the excluded of this society who fight for the land to produce the sacred bread of each day. He wanted to feed the hope of those that earn their living from the land. We want justice and punishment for the murderers and their agents.
They have stolen your fellow physical presence, but you remain alive in our dreams and struggle. You live in every landless peasant who struggles for a single piece of ground. We express our solidarity with your friends and family, and we echo our cry for Justice.
Violence is the weapon of the ignorant and the oppressors. Comrades of Pará and family members of great strength and solidarity.
For our martyrs, no minute of silence for a lifetime of fighting!
