On the 8th of November 2017, father, and land and farmer rights activist Webby T. Agrabio Senior was gunned down in southern Negros Occidental, in the Philippines.
The 51 year-old council member of Kilusang Magbukid ng Pilipinas Kabankalan City Chapter was defending land and farmer rights. It is reported that land rights have been a critical concern for local farmers due to land rights that often end in violent struggles between military government entities and local activists.
Witnesses assert that Agrabio’s assailants were four individuals from the military from the 67th Infantry Battalion.
Agrabio’s death comes within a climate of sustained violence against peasant, farmer and land rights defenders under the Duterte administration.
