Prominent youth leader Abdiweli Ahmed Mohamed was shot dead on the evening of Thursday 31 May by suspected Somali militant group al-Shabab as he walked home after evening prayers in Mogadishu, police said.
A police officer confirmed on Friday that Abdiweli Ahmed Mohamed, the Chairman of the Warta Nabadda district Youth Group, was killed by two armed men who accosted him while on his way home in the central Wardhigley district of the restive Mogadishu.
«The youth activist was shot dead at Iftar time (evening prayers) by unknown armed men who fled the scene after the shooting. We are investigating the incident,» said the police officer who declined to be named.
No group has claimed responsibility for the latest killing amid a series of other assassination incidents that have since been reported during the holy month of Ramadan.
The latest incident also comes after the militant group released a video record of some of the brutal assassinations the insurgents have carried out recently against individuals accused of working with local governments.
