«Arnel Penaso, 48, an active member of San Antonio Maparat Farmers Association (SAMFA) was shot dead around 6 pm today.

Arnel was staying in his house in Purok 2 Barangay Poblacion when an unidentified assailant onboard of single motorcycle suddenly came to his house and shot him multiple times resulting to his death.

His kin recalled that on May this year, he was summoned by the 25th infantry battalion based in Monkayo Compostela Valley, solely because Penaso is under surveillance.

Penaso’s family was one of the affected families during the super typhoon Pablo. He has been at the forefront of their long-standing struggle to demand housing units due for [super typhoon] Pablo victims.

Based on Karapatan-SMR’s tally on political killings in the region, Penaso is the 79th victim. He is the 133rd farmer killed by the Duterte regime»
