Darlin Dionisio Funes Vásquez, 21, student in the Jesús Milla Selva institute, was murdered on 29 April 2019. He was shot by unidentified men.
He was a night student and was studying for a degree in Sciences and Humanities. He was originally from Olanchito and was living in the Kennedy neighbourhood of Tegucigalpa. He worked in a restaurant.
Darlin had participated in the protests in Tegucigalpa against the proposed reforms of the health and education sector. The protesters feared that the reforms could lead to mass lay-offs of teachers and doctors and that the restructuring would be the first step towards the privatisation of education and health services. The protests lead to violent clashes between the protesters and police. President Juan Orlando Hernandez withdrew the proposed legislation but much unrest remains.
