Javier Giron Trivino was a member of the Guardia Indigena (Indigenous Guard) ° of the Nasa people in the reservation KiweTehkKsxa’wpo, a role he had carried out for almost 20 years.
He was killed on 2 February 2020, at 6 in the morning when he was in a shop in the village of Vereda El Jaguito, municipality of .Santander de Quilichao in northern Cauca. A man walked in and shot him three times, killing him instantly.
The Asociación de Cabildos Indígenas del Norte del Cauca -ACIN-(Association of Indigenous Councils of North Caua) issued a statement condemning the killing and expressing their concern at the increasing levels of violence against the community.
In days prior to the killing community leaders reported that a leaflet, allegedly distributed by members of paramilitary group las Águilas Negras, had identified twenty-seven members of the Guardia Indigena as military targets.
This part of the Cauca is controlled by the dissident Dagoberto Ramos unit of the FARC who control the drug trade and also extort money from small business people.
Indigenous leaders have called on the paramilitary groups to respect the lives of the indigenous communities and to leave them out of their conflict with the government.
