Julio César Sogamoso was president of the Junta de Acción Comunal (Community Action Board) in the village of Barranco Colorado in the municipality of Puerto Rico in Meta. He was also a member of the Asociación Campesina de Pequeños y Medianos Productores del Río Cafre (the Peasant Association of Small and Medium Farmers in Río Cafre)–AGROCAFRE.
Julio César was shot dead on 29 August, 2020.
His death brought to 4 the number of human rights defenders killed on that day. The main targets are community leaders and former members of the FARC who have signed the Peace Agreement. The wave of killings across the country has been attributed to the struggle for control of the drug trade by dissident members of paramilitary groups, especially in those areas from which the FARC has withdrawn.
