Oaxaca. He was a leading campaigner against large scale mining projects, which are being proposed for development in the eastern part of the Istmo region. He was also involved in the campaign against the imposition of excessive charges for electricity.<\/p>\n<p>At 08.00pm on Saturday 8 March he was found badly beaten and semi-conscious on the road between San Jos<span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">\u00e9 and the petrol station at <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Tapanatepec. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">He had extensive bruises and other injuries <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">and his taxi, which was found nearby, was a complete wreck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">According to witness reports, his taxi was followed by several other vehicles, which pursued him until they finally drove him off the road. The killers then beat Jos\u00e9 Alberto, leaving him in a critical condition. He was initially taken to a local clinic, before being taking to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">another<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> hospital, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">because of the critical nature of his injuries, where he later died. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">J<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">os\u00e9 Alberto <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">had taken part in recent dialogues between local communities and the state authorities t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">o reach agreement on how to de-escalate the conflict with the communities over the electricity charges.
