A landless leader of Pontal Fam, (located in the municipality of Santa Maria das Barreiras, in the far south of Pará), was shot and killed on 01 August 2018. The unknown murderers were aboard a motorcycle when they attacked.
According to information from Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) Juvenil Martins Rodrigues, 59, known as «Foguinho», had received threats before his murder.
Initially the media didn’t link the land conflict to Juvenil death. However, a news agency called Correio Portal de Carajás claimed that the case was being investigated by the civil police, and if it could be linked to the land issue, the land police would be involved in the investigation as well.
