Miliciades Trochez Conda

Milciades Trochez Conda, 39, was murdered in Santander de Quilichao on the 12 of January 2012. The indigenous leader lived in Loma Gruesa, Jambalo was married and the father of seven children Miliciades was an active member of the Indigenous Watch. According to witnesses who observed the attack he was shot ten times by two assailants on a motorbike in Caloto municipality.

According to the Jambalo Indigenous Council and ACIN Milciades had been repeatedly targeted by members of the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) since 2001. Since that time he had received frequent death threats from that group.

The Regional Indigenous Council of the Cauca CRIC and the Association of Indigenous Councils of Northern Cauca ACIN categorically condemn this latest killing and consider it of particular concern that the Colombian state has so far failed to take the necessary measures to protect the life and integrity of the Indigenous peoples of the northern Cauca. This is despite the precautionary measures granted by the IACHR and the ongoing threats and harassment suffered by the inhabitants of these communities.
