Beverly Geronimo

Beverly Geronimo, aged 27 was gunned down on the 26th of may while she was making her way back from buying school supplies alongside her 8-year-old daughter. The indigenous Lumad mother and daughter were stopped in the road when two armed men in civilian clothes opened fire. Though Beverly died as a result of her several wounds, her daughter survived with only a gunshot to the arm.

It is believed that the shooters are agents of the Philippine Army’s 25th Infantry Battalion.

Beverley’s death comes shortly after her active campaign against the large-scale mining operations with the Agusan Del Sur region such as OZ Metals and Agusan Petroleum. The indigenous community activist was a member of the Tabing Guangan Farmers Association (TAGUAFA) and the Parent-Teachers’ Community Association (PTCA) of the Mindanao Interfaith Services Foundation Inc. (MISFI) Academy.

As a result of her active opposition to these sectors, Beverly had been the recipient of violent intimidation tactics such as threats, coercion, and harassment from soldiers located n the community.
