On 28 September 2017 Reneboy Magayano was killed in Maragusan, Compostela Valley. At around 5:30pm he was buying fish from a public market when two men on a motorcycle shot him four times. He died while being transported to a hospital in Tagum City.

Magayano, an agricultural worker,  was a staunch defender of the rights of both peasants and workers.  He was the chairperson of the Maragusan Workers Association and a council member of Hugpong sa mga Mag-uuma sa Walog Compostela – a peasants rights organisation.

Cristina Palabay, secretary general of the human rights group Karapatan said in a statement that the perpetrators were believed to be members of the military. An investigation has been opened into their identity but no progress has been made. The Karapatan spokesperson for Southern Mindanao, Jay Apiag, attributed the killing to the May 2017 declaration of martial law on the island. The killing of Magayano is the 49th the organisation has documented in the region alone. Apiag added, “The Duterte regime and his armed minions are accountable for the crimes they foisted to Filipino people, notably on peasants and lumads who were primarily victims of fascism”.
