On October 18 2017, Eliecer Carvajal was shot several times by unknown assailants in Putumayo, Colombia, as he was travelling out to work on his farm. He died instantly. Hooded armed men had been seen moving around the area in previous days. The paramilitaries had distributed a list with the names of their targets. One of the names on the list was Eliecer.
Eliecer was the Public Attorney of the Community Action Board of the Caño Avena and worked for the rights of the peasant community. Eliecer had been actively involved in promoting campaigns for the substitution of illicit coca production with normal crops and in the organisation of programmes to protect human rights defenders in the area.
Eliecer was the fourth community leader killed in one week.
