On the 27 February 2018, at 5:30pm, human rights defender Evans Njoroge was shot dead by a police national officer in Meru region in Kenya.
Evans Njoroge who is mostly referred by the comrades as Kidero was a fourth year student, pursuing Bachelor of Science in Computer science.
On 27 February 2018, Evans Njoroge was taking part in a student demonstration outside Meru University. The demonstration was organised in protest at the rise in school fees which would violate the right to an education by making higher education unattainable for many students. Evans Njoroge attempted to flee the demonstration by running away as he was being intimidated and threatened by police due to his prominent role as a student human rights defender and for his role in organising the protest. The defender was pursued by police as he ran away from the demonstration and was shot in the back of the head in a private compound.
According to the family doctor Dr Moses Njue, the shooter had the gun pressed against the head of the deceased before firing. He died instantly.
« My son was a disciplined role model for many. We had high hopes for him. His death is a big loss for us thanks to that trigger-happy officer. »said the father.
It is important to underline that Evans Njoroge was victim of intimidation, death threats and attacks form the national police officers due to his involvement in defence of the students rights.
