Fabio Alfonso Guanga García, 33 years old, was governor of the Awá community of San Francisco in the Ñambi Piedra Verde reservation, municipality of Barbacoas, Nariño.

On the evening of 28 July, 2020 armed men entered his house and dragged him out. When they were a few metres from the house they shot him dead.

The gummen then fired at the house and threw grenades at another house. As a result, a woman died and three adults and two minors were wounded.

Just the day before  another member of the Awá people, James Canticuz, was shot dead, also in Barbacoas. A total of 9 members of the Awá people have been killed in a period of 4 months.

This part of Nariño is a well known strategic route for the shipment of drugs across the border into Ecuador. The killings are also linked to attempts by indigenous leaders to restrict movement in the area to prevent the spread of Covid. This restriction of their movement is resented by armed criminal groups.
