Geovanny Díaz Cárcamo

Geovanny Díaz Cárcamo, 37, was a father of five and a member of the Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice (Movimiento Amplio por la Dignidad y la Justicia, MADJ in Spanish.) He lived in Pajuiles, in the department of Atlántida.

Around 4:00AM on 23 January 2018, Geovanny was dragged from his home by eight men in police and SWAT team uniforms, then peppered with bullets on the nearby highway, according to the Guardian. The British newspaper refers to Geovanny as a quiet-mannered campesino who gathered information while farming the hills near a proposed dam site, where a camera drone monitors the area, and passed it on to community leaders.

Radio Dignidad, the community radio station for MADJ, announced that Geovanny was a young man who participated actively in the Encampment of Dignity for Water and Life (Campamento Digno Por el Agua y Por la Vida,) which had been in his community since March 22nd 2017.

There is another campamento digno in the municipality of Arizona, also in Atlántida, where community leader Ramón Fiallos was killed within hours of Geovanny. Both encampments had coordinated demonstrations on the evening of 17 January. Ramón was hit by a bullet during the protest in Arizona, while Geovanny’ s public execution occurred later, once the protesters had returned home. For this reason, said Radio Dignidad, « our grief is amplified from El Retiro, Arizona to Pajuiles, Tela. »
