Fifty-six year old Gustavo Herrera Gutiérrez was a community leader as well as a lawyer, psychologist and businessman. He had been a prominent campaigner on social issues for many years and was a member of the political movement, Colombia Humana. He was the Cauca director of Colombia Humana’s presidential campaign in 2018.
On 20 October, 2020, gunmen opened fire on his car in vereda La Cabrera, on the road between Popayán and Coconuco. While he survived the initial attack he died later in hospital from his injuries.
Earlier he had been involved in the demobilization process of the M-19 group.
Herrera Gutierrez’s neice has been charged with being the intellectual author of the killing and two men have been charged with carrying out the crime.
