Malik Jrar

Malik Jrar, a shia lawyer, was shot dead on Friday, February 8, 2013. His car was intercepted by two motorcyclists while he was on his way to drop his two boys (Mohsin and Hassan) to school on Gulbahar Road Peshawar. The two boys, who survived the attack, explained to the police that the men fired shots from a pistol at their dad, who received a head injury. Then, the attackers opened one of the car’s doors and fired again at Malik from close range.

Malik was a member of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) council and former vice chairperson of the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa chapter of the NGO. Malik was recognized in the community for helping people in need of legal assistance who could not afford it.

After his murder, the Peshawar High Court Bar Association announced that lawyers would be boycotting court proceedings the next day and the Khyber Bar Council called for a province-wide strike for the following Monday. Lawyers boycotted court proceedings in protest and held a sit-in on Shershah Suri Road (in front of the Governor’s House).

On the other hand, members of the Imamia Students Organisation, Imamia Jirga and Tehrik Nifaz-i-Fiqha Jafaria (TNFJ) condemned the killing and described it as a failure of the authorities to maintain law and order in the city and failing to protect Shia people.

The HRCP council carried on various attempts to bring the killers to justice, however, they remain at large.
