On Tuesday, February 2, 2016, in the bordering rural area between the municipalities of Colón-Genoa and La Unión in the department of Nariño, the teacher and trade union leader Senelia Rengifo Gómez was killed when she returned from her workplace to her residence in La Union.

The teacher Senelia, had worked for 17 years in the teacher training of Nariño and in 2013 was transferred to the Educational Center « Cimarronas » of the municipality of Colón Genoa.

According to the Teachers’ Union of Nariño, Senelia was recognized as a union leader in her region and a prominent professional for her teaching work and her great contributions focused on the educational quality of the children, as well as the defense of the rights of teachers in the various municipalities of Nariño where she served as a teacher.

The Nariño Magisterium denounced from the secretary of Human Rights of the Teachers ‘Union of Nariño that in Cimarronas’ village the murder of a teacher in similar circumstances occurs for the second time.
