Per Rappler:
« Indigenous and environmental activist Ricardo Pugong Mayumi was shot dead on Friday, March 2, in Sitio Angadal, Ambabag, Kiangan, Ifugao, by at least two assassins.
Mayumi, 52, was one of the leaders of the Ifugao Peasant Movement (IPM) and led the opposition to the Quadriver Mini Hydro Dam in his native Tinoc town, also in Ifugao.
Kiangan police, which described Mayumi as a farmer, said his cousin and neighbor heard the dogs barking at 8 pm on March 2 and later heard 4 gunshots. »
Mayumi’s unfortunate death is « emblematic of the grave dangers faced by Filipinos, particularly those from indigenous communities, who choose to exercise their fundamental rights as they seek to protect their land, natural resources, and livelihoods, » a spokesperson from the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) noted.
Calls for greater security for environmental rights defenders come as it is further reported that the Philippines suffers as the deadliest country for the environmental rights defenders, especially for indigenous land defenders.
