Naeem Sabir Jamaldini

Naeem Sabir Jamaldini, social activist, was shot dead by two motorcyclists wearing masks on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 while he was in front of his bookshop in Khuzdar. He was shot seven times at point blank range and passed away on his way to the hospital. An armed group called Baloch Musallah Defa’a Tanzeem -a paramilitary killing squad  allegedly operated and funded by Pakistan intelligence agency (ISI)- claimed responsibility for the assassination.

Naeem was recognized for promoting human rights in the region, especially by defending the rights of non-Muslim citizens of Pakistan.

As the coordinator of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) in Khuzdar district, Naeem documented cases of enforced disappearances of students, lawyers and political activists (among others), as well as the recovery of their tortured bodies. His work helped the legal process to prosecute these cases.

He was also part of the Balochistan commission of Health and Rural Development (HARD), a non-governmental, non-political and non-religious organization working on ending poverty and injustice. He was in charge of mobilizing the community groups for human rights, coordinating the component of human rights and conducting community dialogues, seminars and workshops.

As a consequence of his dedication to his work, Naeem had been the target of death threats, for several months from persons believed to be from the intelligence agencies. He shared his fears with the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) that he would one day either be abducted by the law enforcement agencies and disappeared or killed.

The situation of abductions, forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings has been prevalent not only in Balochistan but all through Pakistan.
