On Sunday, 24 December, 2020, Jose Adan Mejia was found shot to death in a remote location in the community of El Volcan, in western Honduras. Medina was a member of the Tolupán Indigenous people.
Apparently, he was returning home from work when unknown gunmen came up to him and shot him dead.
It is believed that the killing was in reprisal for his work defending the rights of the Tolupán people in the community of La Candelaria.
Honduras is considered the fifth-deadliest country for activists, with 14 land and environmental defenders killed in 2019, up from four people in 2018, according to data made available by advocacy group Global Witness.
