Raúl Buitrago Perdomo, vice-president of the Junta de Acción Comunal of Fraguita, was shot dead in his house by two men who drove a motorcycle on Sunday, July 29, 2018. Reportedly, the men were FARC dissidents who were terrorizing and extorting communities in Cauca and Caquetá. They were later apprehended and killed by the Colombian military forces.
Raúl was a well-known spokesperson of the community. He was an active member of the municipal commission in charge of the participative planning of the illegal-crop substitution programme in San José del Fragua, the Comisión Municipal de Planeación Participativa (CMPP) of the Programa Nacional Integral de Sustitución de Cultivos de Uso Ilícito (PNIS).
He was also part of the peasant organization, Asociación de Campesinos Portales del San José del Fragua, as head of environmental matters, where he was leading the opposition to oil developments in the region, due to their negative impacts on the environment.
