Samba Lampsar, a student and native of Senegal was an active member of African Unity, an NGO which promotes tolerance and fights racism. He actively participated in anti-racism events. In particular, he gave a series of anti-racism lectures in several St. Petersburg schools, aiming to promote the African culture and teach tolerance. He was murdered in St. Petersburg on April 7, 2006.
On the day of his death Samba Lampsar and several other African students were attacked by an unknown assailant in St. Petersburg’s city centre after having participated in the weekly celebration of inter-cultural friendship between Russians and international citizens. The attacker was hidden in the archway of a yard, beside the celebration’s venue, and suddenly started shouting Nazi slurs. As the students were running away from the aggressor, he shot at them, killing Mr. Lampsar. The murderer escaped, leaving behind his shot gun. The gun displayed a swastika and the inscription ‘white power’ on it. The case was prosecuted as a hate crime under article 105-2 of the Russian Criminal Code.
