On the 10th of August, Yandong Menyo, a Higaonon and an indigenous leader of the Lumad indigenous group in the southern Philippines was shot to death by the 8th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army in Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines.
Yandong worked with the Pigyayonggaan, an indigenous community that led campaigns against monoculture plantation and extractive and environmentally deleterious mining projects in the north of Mindanao.
Yandong worked against the continuing dispossession of indigenous communities from their ancestral lands in the Philippines, and as a result, had encountered previous threats against his life for his environmental rights work.
